Malon is a very spunky young woman who's usually found with a smile on her face. She knows the meaning of hard work and doesn't seem to mind all of the chores given her. Malon puts others before herself, staying at the ranch during Ingo's rule so he would not hurt the horses. Malon always has a warm welcome for Link and a kind word.
Link first meets Malon in the town marketplace. She is surprised to see that he is a Kokiri and insists on calling him "Fairy Boy," as she is fascinated by his fairy companion. She says she is waiting for her father, who is delivering milk to the castle. Malon gives Link an egg which eventually hatches into a cucco and Link uses the bird to awaken Talon, Malon's father. Back at the ranch, Malon teaches Link "Epona's Song," the song her mother used to sing.
After seven years, when Link returns, the ranch has been taken over by Ingo. Talon has been driven out and Malon works alone in the stables, afraid to disobey Ingo because of how he'll treat the horses. Link wins the horse, Epona, from Ingo and restores the ranch to normal. It is then that Malon finally recognizes Link and cheerfully welcomes him back. Malon challenges Link to beat her race track record, and when he succeeds, she delivers a cow to his house. (Yay! House cow!)
It's quite obvious the two are friends. Malon makes up a nickname for Link and he doesn't seem to mind, and when he comes back after seven years (eventually) she remembers him. She even taught Link "Epona's Song," which holds much sentimental value. Their personalities seem a bit opposite; Link is more reserved, while Malon is always giggling and just plain acting happy. But I don't think it would cause a clash.
I think it could work. Link would appreciate someone like Malon who is hard-working and kind, and Malon could get along with just about anybody. The only problem I see is the fact that Malon lives on a ranch. I just can't picture Link living on a ranch...feeding cuccos...milking cows. It's obvious Malon isn't going to leave the ranch anytime soon, especially since there's no one else to pass it on to after Talon dies. Although I suppose if Link loved Malon he would give up his adventurous life to stay with her.
